Integrating the Dental Operating Microscope into Daily Practice: A Hands-on Workshop

Abstract: 

While many General Dental Practitioners (GDPs) have invested in the Dental Operating Microscope (DOM), the transition from installation to daily clinical integration remains a significant challenge. This two-hour, hands-on workshop is specifically designed for the practitioner who seeks to bridge the gap between "owning" a microscope and "mastering" it for routine restorative and diagnostic procedures.

Moving beyond basic endodontic applications, this session focuses on the "Micro-Mindset"—a workflow-oriented approach to precision dentistry. Participants will first master critical "Zero-Point" calibrations, including IPD, diopter adjustment, and parfocality, to eliminate eye strain and headaches. The workshop then transitions into a high-intensity, hands-on circuit. Key exercises include mastering indirect vision for maxillary quadrants, refining crown margins at high magnification, and utilizing the DOM for the early diagnosis of craze lines and cracks.

By emphasizing ergonomic positioning and "mirror magic" techniques, this workshop provides practical strategies to improve clinical outcomes and occupational longevity. Attendees will leave with the muscle memory and confidence to utilize the DOM not as an occasional luxury, but as an indispensable tool for every patient, every day.

Dr. Ho Fu Tak, Tom

Dr. Ho is a Specialist in Endodontics. He obtained his dental degree from the University of Hong Kong in 1992 and completed his Master’s degree in Conservative Dentistry in 1996. In 2008, Dr. Ho was awarded Membership in Restorative Dentistry (Endodontics) from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and in 2022, he achieved Fellowship in Dental Surgery from the same institution. Additionally, he attained Membership in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (Endodontics) in 2010.

Dr. Ho has been a Fellow of both the Hong Kong Academy of Medicine and The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong (Specialty of Endodontics) since 2011. He is currently engaged in private practice.

With a strong passion for teaching, Dr. Ho serves as a Part-time Clinical Lecturer at the Faculty of Dentistry, The University of Hong Kong, where he mentors undergraduate and Master’s students, particularly in the field of endodontics. From 2011 to 2022, he also contributed to postgraduate training as a trainer in the Specialty of Family Dentistry.

Beyond his clinical and teaching roles, Dr. Ho has been actively involved with the College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong. He served as a Council Member from 2016 to 2024 and held the position of Vice President during the 2023–2024 term. He currently contributes as an Education Facilitator for the Dental College.
