It’s the best time to learn online!
“Clinical decision-making and treatment planning are ideal topics to learn online.” ITI fellow and e-learning expert Dr. Nikos Mattheos discusses with Philipp Nueesch of ITI about the possibilities of on-line learning and how we can use these difficult times to learn and grow from home.

You might believe that implant dentistry - a predominantly clinical subject – can only be learned while in the clinic. But think again! While clinical competences of course are essential, there is much more to know in order to be successful with Implant Dentistry. Some of which are actually very well suited for online learning from the comfort of one’s home.
Dr. Nikos Mattheos who is an ITI fellow has taught tens of thousands of students on the subject of implant dentistry through online courses comments: “There is a very significant portion about decision making, which doesn’t require you to cut or suture.” In other words, online learning can work very well to improve student’s treatment planning skills and creating the right treatment pathways for different types of cases. “You can train your decision making and educate yourself in which clinical situations to do what and why”, explains Dr. Mattheos.

ITI has invested many years in the development of online learning resources, through the work of dozens of world-class experts. This work is now crystalised in the Online Curriculum a structured but self-paced course consisting of 6 domains- and the Online Academy - a vast library of more than 700 online lessons and modules.
There have never been more options to learn online and – for better or worse – there was probably never a better time either. To get started, Dr. Mattheos recommends students to reflect on their current clinical practice and define where they want to be in two years from now. He asks: “Do you want to place implants surgically, do you want to restore them, or both? Do you want to treat straight forward patients or engage with complex cases, too?”. Once you have defined where you want to be you can start to pinpoint what you are missing and pick the right learning content. “The ITI Online Academy is an ideal place to pick education content that fits your individual needs”, says Dr. Mattheos. However, if you are not sure yet what you need, then go for the full ITI Curriculum. It teaches you from the beginning and upon its completion you are in a good position not only to get started clinically but also to decide which are your next learning objectives and expand your knowledge selectively.

There will be a time after the current pandemic, when we will all have to resume our lives and work and work extra to catch up with everything, we put on hold today. The time at home now is the right time to get prepared. ITI offers free access to its entire online learning content until 30 April.
