Beginner Program on Alveolar Ridge Augmentation, Module 1 - Bone augmentation in Horizontal Dimension

Course Highlight:
The advent of Dental implants has ushered in a new era of a highly predictable treatment option for replacing missing teeth, from single teeth to fully edentulous mouths. Many clinicians are now offering this extremely successful treatment to their patients. However, adequate bone volume is essential for predictable implant placement and integration.

Recent studies (Cha et al.) have highlighted that Bone Augmentation (BA) is frequently required at implant placement surgery (over 50% of all cases and over 75% of all anterior cases). Hence, BA becomes an integral part of implant surgical procedures to provide a predictable & stable long-term outcome. However, BA is a technique-sensitive procedure, clinicians may struggle to carry out this demanding operation with confidence and poise. When complications arise, they may compromise the treatment outcome and can be frustrating and disheartening to both the operators and patients.

In this module, Dr. Teoh would like to share his experience on how to perform BA procedures in a predictable manner with reliable outcomes. The course will include the diagnosis of ridge defects, the classifications of alveolar ridge defects; cover the basic principles of bone regeneration. Hands-on demonstration and workshop on how to harvest autogenous bone in a safe manner, and stabilize the grafting material to rebuild the ridge defect using different techniques such as G.B.R. with either resorbable collagen membrane or non-resorbable PTFE membrane.  There will be plenty of tricks and tips on flap advancement and how to achieve tension-free flap closure with different suturing techniques. He will also cover techniques for developing the soft tissue profile around dental implants after BA. The overall objective of the course is to equip the participants with the comprehensive skill and knowledge of BA in the Horizontal dimension.

Learning Objectives:

  • Augment the defective alveolar ridge with a horizontal defect
  • Harvest autogenous bone to mix with the biomaterial of your choice to improve the outcome of the bone graft
  • Stabilize the membrane barrier with different techniques
  • Flap management to ensure primary closure
  • Improve the soft tissue condition for implant restorations

Hands-on, Horizontal Ridge Augmentation with Pig Jaw:

  • Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) Techniques (e.g. Contour Augmentation; Sausage Technique)
  • GBR at implant placement (simultaneous approach) VS GBR before implant placement (staged approach)
  • How to harvest autogenous bone from different areas
  • Flap management
  • Stability of bone graft
  • Suturing techniques
  • Soft tissue management after bone augmentation
